ANCIENT ROMAN MOSAIC DISCOVERED AT “THE SPRING OF THE NYMPHS” NEAR THE VILLAGE OF KASNAKOVO
Olden Roman mosaic and dozens of artifacts were discovered during excavations near the sanctuary of the Nymphs and Aphrodite, close to the village of Kasnakovo. “During this archeological season, our work was focused on the largest building with an area of 2700 m². We studied the northern and western rooms, which turned out to have bathing and hygienic functions. An interesting small pool was also discovered”, said the head of the research, Dr. Veselka Katsarova, a representative of the National Archaeological Institute & Museum . It is believed that the property was originally the home of the Roman general of Thracian origin Titus Flavius and his beloved wife Claudia Montana in the II to IV century. In the III century it was destroyed during the invasions of the Goths.
Researchers also know the origins of the artifacts - statue of the goddess Isis and the head of a satyr, discovered in 2017. Through an analysis of the material in the frame of a Bulgarian-Austrian project, its origin and the region of the carved marble figures were established .
