MAYOR OF DIMITROVGRAD OPENS NATIONAL FORUM ON MUNICIPAL FINANCES, ORGANIZED BY NAMRB
The Mayor of Dimitrovgrad Municipality and Deputy Chairman of NAMRB opened a discussion forum "Opportunities and Challenges for Local Finances in 2026", which is taking place in Sofia today and tomorrow. The event, organized by the National Association of Municipalities in the Republic of Bulgaria and NAMRB-ACTIVE, brought together nearly 200 representatives of local authorities and financial experts from across the country. The discussions focused on municipal finances, Budget 2026, the municipal waste tax and specific case studies from the practice of administrations during the introduction of the euro at the beginning of the year.
The Mayor of Dimitrovgrad was part of the first discussion panel, together with Silvia Georgieva – Executive Director of the National Municipal Administration of the Republic of Bulgaria and Delyana Ivanova – Chairperson of the Supervisory Board of the Bulgarian Development Bank.
The position of the Association of All Bulgarian Municipalities is consistent, including the extended regime must be implemented in a way that preserves fiscal discipline, but without rendering meaningless the autonomy of municipal budgets. When there are no sufficiently clear regulations and methodological solutions, we see the consequences in places in the first weeks: new policies that municipalities must launch or build on in light of the new realities are blocked; there is a risk of penalties under contracts because deadlines and commitments do not wait for the political calendar and the implementation of investments, including those with external funding and projects that have specific end dates and intermediate stages, is made more difficult. Let the municipalities use the time meaningfully: with open conversation, with respect for the different situations in places and with a clear goal - more normal work of municipalities, even when the national environment is unstable.
