Historical Museum-Dimitrovgrad

img_0979-1.jpg

Established in 1951, the Historical Museum-Dimitrovgrad is a cultural and scientific institution and the first museum of modern history in Bulgaria. It is located in the town centre, in a building complex that also houses the Penyo Penev Town Library and the Municipal Enterprise Children and Youth Centre. The museum comprises four exhibition halls where visitors can see artefacts from the Neolithic (6th century BC) to the present day.

Brigadier Movement in Bulgaria Hall is unique and presents a complex and controversial period of Bulgaria’s recent past: 1954-1990. Brigadier uniforms, flags, prizes, photos of brigadiers’ daily life, and so on reveal the history of the Brigadier movement and immerse the visitors in the spirit of the age.

Dimitrovgrad Hall follows Dimitrovgrad’s historical development from its founding to the end of the 20th century. It features objects, documents, and photos, showcasing the town’s economy, culture, education, sport, public life, and international relations. The most notable exhibits include a book proposal to the then-prime minister of Bulgaria, Georgi Dimitrov, to name the town after him, a photo album of the town’s Second Urbanistic Plan, created by AR Petar Tashev and co., and the first camera of the town’s Amateur Filmmakers Club.

The Archaeology Hall exhibits artefacts from the history of the Dimitrovgrad Municipality’s towns and villages. Some of them have continuously expanded from the Neolithic to today. Among the more interesting artefacts are the following:

  • A Neolithic man's skeleton found in 2009 during rescue excavations near the village of Krum. It is part of the only Neolithic Necropolis on the territory of Bulgaria and its neighbouring countries;
  • A stone altar with an Ancient Greek inscription and elaborate iconography, dedicated to Zeus Dolichenus, found near the village of Bodrovo;
  • A marble statue of the Egyptian goddess Isis, found at the Sanctuary of the Nymphs and Aphrodite near the village of Kasnakovo.

The Historical Museum-Dimitrovgrad’s temporary exhibition hall hosts diverse and fascinating exhibitions of its collections and those of other visiting museums and institutions.

The museum has a general history profile and comprises the following departments, cultural institutions, and sites:

  • NEW AND MOST RECENT HISTORY
  • ETHNOGRAPHY
  • ARCHAEOLOGY
  • ART: PETKO CHURCHULIEV ART GALLERY
  • PENYO PENEV HOUSE MUSEUM
  • RETRO APARTMENT
  • SANCTUARY OF THE NYMPH AND APHRODITE ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE near Kasnakovo village

Historical Museum-Dimitrovgrad is one of the sites included in the 100 Tourist Sites in Bulgaria initiative of the Bulgarian Tourist Union.
