On May 9, 2025 at 5:30 p.m. in the Grosso Hall, a public presentation of the new concept for renewing the exhibition of the Historical Museum – Dimitrovgrad will take place. After a competition announced by the America for Bulgaria Foundation, in partnership with the Municipality of Dimitrovgrad and the Historical Museum – Dimitrovgrad, creators were invited to create a contemporary artistic and spatial design and presentation of the museum’s permanent exhibition, which will be transformed into a modern and interactive one, in accordance with the world’s leading museum standards.

An international jury evaluated the concepts and selected the best one. The jury includes the curator at the House of European History in Brussels Simina Badika, the director of the museum in Nova Huta, Poland Karolina Zhlobetska, chief assistant Dr. Iglika Mishkova, acting deputy director of the Institute of Ethnology and Folklore Studies with the Ethnographic Museum, the philosopher and journalist Toni Nikolov, the director of the Dimitrovgrad Historical Museum Antoaneta Stancheva and the deputy mayor of the Dimitrovgrad municipality Yasho Minkov, who is also vice-president of the international ATRIUM Association for European heritage related to architecture and history of the 20th century.

The winning concept was prepared by a team of respected professionals, including architects from the New Architectural Heritage Foundation, led by architects Aneta Vasileva and Emilia Kaleva, curator Svetlana Kuyumdzhieva, historian Alexander Vezenkov, cultural scientist Velislava Petrova, graphic designer and artist Ivo Dimitrov, and videographer Filip Stamenkov.

The conceptual design of the new exhibition of the historical museum recreates the complex and exciting history of the city with modern means, so as to make it interesting, understandable and memorable for all groups of visitors. The concept reflects the modern function of museums, which are organized not as a passive showcase of the past, but as an experience for the audience. Their main mission is to involve the visitor in their story, to hold their attention, to surprise them with things they did not know, and to inspire them to learn more.

The concept for the new exhibition divides the history of the city into three main themes: the new man, the new city and the new life. They cover the period before the establishment of Dimitrovgrad with Baron Hirsch's railway, agriculture, life around the Maritsa River, through the key moment with its construction, the brigade movement, the development of industry, architectural planning, culture and social life, the important personalities who shaped the city, its parks and nature, to the specifics of the city in recent times.

The thematic division allows for the emphasis on phenomena characteristic of Dimitrovgrad such as the brigade movement, mining, and hard industry to be examined more comprehensively in different aspects.

The whole idea for renewing the exhibition uses the means of modern technologies and contemporary visual arts, so as to create a more holistic experience. The original documents, photographers and archives in the collection are planned to be combined with video projections, animations, lighting and texts that will complement and further develop the story about them. In addition, the exhibition will leave an opportunity for the residents of Dimitrovgrad and people who are truly excited about its history to supplement and participate in this story with personal stories, photographs, objects, as they have done so far. There will be a place for them, so that the exhibition is sufficiently dynamic and surprising.

Anyone who wishes to get acquainted with the new concept for renewing the exhibition will be able to participate in the discussion.
