A new ecological project "Green measures to improve air quality in Dimitrovgrad Municipality" has been launched by Dimitrovgrad Municipality. The project will implement activities for planting trees, grass and shrub vegetation along and near transport arteries, in kindergartens and nurseries, inter-block spaces and vertical greening of public municipal property for purifying the air naturally. These details were announced at a press conference today by the project manager, Eng. Plamen Mitkov, and the Deputy Mayor of Dimitrovgrad Municipality, Mr. Yasho Minkov.

During the implementation of the project activities, green species will be planted, selected according to the degree of their contribution to reducing secondary dusting. The environmental benefits of the project will be expressed in reducing the amount of PM10 emissions on the territory of the Dimitrovgrad municipality. The socio-economic benefits are related to protecting the health and improving the quality of life of the residents of the municipality. The project is under contract No. BG16FFPR002-5.008-0007, financed by the Operational Programme "Environment" 2021-2027, co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund and the Cohesion Fund of the European Union under the procedure through direct award to a specific beneficiary No. BG16FFPR002-5.008 "Green measures in urban environment" (3), under priority 5 "Air". The scope of the project is December 2025 - April 2029. The total cost of the project is 1,751,027.29 euro, of which 1,488,373.20 euro from the European Regional Development Fund for less developed regions and 262,654.09 euro from National Co-financing from the state budget of the Republic of Bulgaria.

The project activities in brief:

Four separate activities will be carried out under the project. The largest of them is the landscaping of areas along boulevards and streets in Dimitrovgrad - the boulevards "D. Blagoev", "St. Stambolov", "Treti Mart" and "Zahari Zograf". The types of trees have the greatest absorbing effect on fine dust particles from the so-called secondary air dusting. So, the species are not so decorative, but are mainly selected with the aim of reducing secondary dusting from PM10 - two types of maple trees, plane tree, linden and red oak. The hedge that will be installed is a type of laurel cherry. It is in the city and is recognizable to citizens. The second activity will be landscaping in kindergartens and nurseries. It will cover seven kindergartens and two nurseries. There, mainly tree and shrub vegetation will also be planted. The third activity is landscaping of the so-called compromised green and mud areas - in the Prostor district and near the municipality building. The fourth activity is the so-called "vertical landscaping" - eastern facade of the Trade House and two bus stops. Under the first activity, the replacement of vegetation will remove 161 pieces of old compromised tree vegetation. Some of them are completely dry, others partially, but they are dangerous and damaged. These trees will be replaced with new and suitable species. It is planned that starting of planting has been scheduled for autumn -  the end of October or November, when is the appropriate period for such activities. The specific results of the implementation of the activity will be:

531 trees planted; 25,361 shrubs planted; 37,508 sq.m of greened areas in seven kindergartens and two nurseries; 9,240 sq.m of greened areas along boulevards and streets; 1 32 sq.m. of "vertical gardens", which are innovative landscaping solutions for the municipality of Dimitrovgrad.

The implemented green investment measures lead to reduction in PM10 emissions from secondary dusting and improving the living environment for the residents of the municipality of Dimitrovgrad.
