THE MAYOR OF DIMITROVGRAD WITH A POSITION FOR THE AIR POLLUTION

THE MAYOR OF DIMITROVGRAD WITH A POSITION…

The mayor of Dimitrovgrad municipality Ivo Dimov sent a letter to the Regional Inspectorate of Environment and Water - Haskovo in connection with the frequent air pollution and numerous signals and complaints from citizens for the period 15-20 September 2021. The position of the municipality is that the pollution is directly related to the work of TPP "Maritsa-3" AD. This is the second letter for the last two months, with which the mayor of Dimitrovgrad reacted against the continuing air pollution and signaled the authorized control institution - RIEW Haskovo.

The full text of the letter:

"In connection with the continuing air pollution over Dimitrovgrad with sulfur dioxide above the permissible norms and reported exceedances of the alarm thresholds for sulfur dioxide concentrations in the period 15-20 September, 2021 and our conviction that this is directly related to the work of TPP Maritsa- 3 AD, and our concern for the protection of human health and the environment, as well as the created public tension and intolerance to the occurring pollution, we turn to you, as a competent authority, insisting on taking urgent action, according to the powers given to you by the law to clarify the causes and stop the pollution.

The Municipality of Dimitrovgrad maintains that there is a direct link between the operation of TPP Maritsa-3 AD and the excessive air pollution over Dimitrovgrad and the surrounding villages with sulfur dioxide. This fact, as well as the lack of other alternative sources of sulfur dioxide emissions during the summer season, inevitably leads to the conclusion that excessive pollution is exclusively and solely the result of the work of TPP "Maritsa-3" AD, regardless of the causes leading to it - technological, operational, organizational or otherwise.

In connection with the arguments above, we strongly insist on reviewing the conditions of the Complex Permit, issued to TPP "Maritsa-3" AD, making the necessary changes, including shutting down the plant to eliminate all technological, production and other factors leading to environmental pollution and risks to human health".
