‘THE ETERNAL CONFERENCE’ - EXHIBITION WITH DRAWINGS FROM THE COLLECTION OF THE NATIONAL ACADEMY OF ARTS WILL BE OPENED ON AUGUST 31 AT ‘PETKO CHURCHULIEV’ GALLERY
The exhibition ‘The Eternal Conference’ of the National Academy of Arts (NAA) will be opened on August 31 at 6:00 PM in ‘Petko Churchuliev’ Gallery as part of the program on the occasion of the Dimitrovgrad Holidays ‘2026. It presents twenty graphic studies from the NAA collection, tracing the development of educational drawing and its creative interpretation from the end of the 19th century to the end of 1980s.
The exhibition is part of the museum program of the National Academy of Arts and a long-term project with the same title, launched in 2019. Its main goal is to "open" the museum fund of the National Academy of Arts to both students and teachers, as well as to the general public, by presenting little-known works and revealing various aspects of the history of art education in Bulgaria.
The museum collection of the National Academy of Arts is one of the oldest funds of Bulgarian art. Its formation began with the establishment of the State Drawing School in 1896. Among the works stored in the fund, a special place is occupied by the educational drawings, which today are an important testimony to the development of art education and its methodology in our country. With their high academic qualities, they continue to impress the modern viewer.
The exhibition traces the changes in the understanding of school drawing and the ways in which it gradually freed itself from strict academic canons and became a space for creative exploration. One of the main highlights is the drawing of a nude body – a mandatory educational task in the art education program from the end of the 19th and throughout the 20th century.
Among the authors are some of the most significant names in Bulgarian art – graduates of the Academy of Arts from different generations: Boris Mihaylov, Anton Mitov, Stefan Ivanov, Tseno Todorov, Iliya Beshkov, D. Topliyski, Iliya Petrov, Nikola Gyuzelev, Keazim Isinov, Atanas Yaranov, Nikolay Maistorov, Lyubomir Savinov, and many others.
A special place in the exhibition is occupied by the student sketches of Anton Mitov, created in the 1880s in Italy.
The exhibition offers not only the history of educational drawing, but also the history of art education in Bulgaria. In different approaches to form, figure and space, changes in aesthetic views, the pedagogical methods and artistic language can be traced in the previous century.
The exhibition is taking place within the framework of the Competition for Funding Projects of the National Academy of Arts for 2026.
