80 YEARS OF THE ORGANIZED BRIGADIER MOVEMENT - DIMITROVGRAD TURNED INTO A BRIGADIER CAPITAL AGAIN
On August 5, 2026, Dimitrovgrad hosted a national brigade meeting dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the organized brigade movement in Bulgaria. The event brought together 116 participants from all over the country. Among the attendees were people from Sofia, Lom, Blagoevgrad, Yambol, Silistra, Sliven, Burgas, Plovdiv, and other cities in the country.
Before the official ceremony, the participants visited some of the most emblematic cultural sites in Dimitrovgrad – the Penyo Penev House-Museum, the Retro Apartment, and the local History Museum, where is located the unique collection dedicated to the brigade movement in Bulgaria. The guests viewed the exhibitions with a lot of interest, and a multimedia presentation with archival photographs, preserving the memory of the brigade years, was presented specially for them.
The solemn meeting began in the Summer Garden of the History Museum. The participants were officially welcomed by the Director of the Historical Museum – Dimitrovgrad, Ms Antoaneta Stancheva and the Deputy Mayor of the Municipality of Dimitrovgrad, Mr Yasho Minkov. In their speeches, they emphasized the importance of the brigade movement as a key part of the history of Bulgaria and the leading role in the creation and development of Dimitrovgrad.
During the meeting, the tradition of holding national brigade celebrations on every anniversary of the movement was recalled. Dimitrovgrad, recognized as the first brigade capital, once again welcomed representatives of different generations of brigades, continuing a tradition that began in 1966.
The fund of the Historical Museum in Dimitrovgrad was enriched with an extremely valuable donation related to the history of the national youth brigades. Mr Zdravko Stoev from Sofia presented the museum with the 51-year-old flag of the National Youth Brigade "Belmeken - Sestrimo - Chaira" (1975), whose participants were involved in the construction of one of the largest hydropower complexes in Europe, which is among the most significant energy facilities in the country today. The donation also includes photographs documenting the activities of the National Youth Brigade "Vasil Levski". Thus, the flag will be preserved for future generations as an authentic witness to a significant page in the history of the brigade movement in Bulgaria. As a sign of gratitude, each guest received a specially made souvenir badge dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the organized brigade movement.
The national meeting was organized on the initiative of Mr Pencho Zulchev, Mr Valentin Petkov, Mr Georgiev, and Mr Nikolay Yanev, with the assistance of the Historical Museum – Dimitrovgrad, and the support of the Municipality of Dimitrovgrad.
By celebrating this significant 80th anniversary, the city of Dimitrovgrad solidified its place as the guardian of the memory of the organized brigade movement as a significant page in the Bulgarian history that left a lasting mark on the development of the country and the destiny of different generations.
