DIMITROVGRAD - PART OF THE NETWORK OF THE BALKAN CITIES B40

Dimitrovgrad is a partner of the B40 Network of Balkan Cities, established in 2021 by the mayors of Istanbul, Belgrade, Athens, Sarajevo, Thessaloniki, Dubrovnik, Tirana, Skopie and other Balkan cities from 11 countries.
On the initiative of National Association of Municipalities in Bulgaria, a forum of the Network of Balkan Cities B40 was held in Sofia, to expand the organization created in 2021 on the initiative of the mayor of the Greater Istanbul Municipality, Ekrem Imamoglu. The mayor of Istanbul, Mr Imamoglu, who currently heads the organization, arrived in Sofia for the entry into B40 of the Bulgarian partners. The official host of the visit was the Mayor of Sofia Municipality Mrs. Yordanka Fandakova.
Joining the organization is an expression of the determination of the communities and their leaders to take the important steps with responsibility towards the future of the region.
Environmental and climate issues, refugee pressures, urban poverty, pandemics and the drive for stronger democracy are the vital human problems, facing local governments. The solutions can be found through cooperation, based on the principles of solidarity and empathy for the fate of South-Eastern Europe. The B40 network of Balkan cities is a step towards expanding and strengthening partnerships for effective local solutions to global problems.
The initiative is built on the understanding that better cooperation between Balkan cities in various aspects will create a better future for European cities and citizens. The organization's ambition is to develop local democracy as a support for peace and stability in the Balkans and in Europe. An additional aspect in the work of the B40 initiative is cooperation to develop the institutional capacity of all member cities and to increase their potential.
By signing the declaration, the mayors undertake to work for regional cooperation, democracy, peace and stability between cities. A major emphasis is over the green transformation, innovation and smart cities, tourism and cooperation. The B40 network was created, following the experience of international initiatives such as C40, G20, G7, and the ambition is to cover at least 100 cities from the Balkan region.
